Create your own AI girlfriend: in-app customization compared

"Create your own AI girlfriend" is a promise every app makes and almost none deliver equally. On some, "create" means picking a hair color. On others, it means writing a personality, a backstory, and rules of behavior she actually follows. That gap is the whole decision.
Customization comes in three depths: avatar-only (change how she looks), avatar-plus-personality (pick traits from menus), and full character authoring (write who she is in your own words). If you want a girlfriend who feels specifically yours, you want the deep end, and that lives on the roleplay platforms (Character.AI, PolyBuzz) and, at the extreme, in self-hosting. The dedicated builders (DreamGF, Secrets AI) go deep on the look and shallow on the writing.
The three depths

Avatar only: decorating, not authoring
Anima (the iGirl and iBoy apps, now published by LABANE CORP. Limited) gives free users 15 customizable avatars, but the personality is largely on rails, per Mozilla's Privacy Not Included review.
Replika has genuinely rich 3D avatar customization plus a gem-currency cosmetics store ($0.99 to $19.99 packs), but the "who she is" part is emergent from chat, not something you author up front. These are great if you care most about how she looks and are happy to let personality develop.

Menu personality: the girlfriend builders
The dedicated builders are strong on look and moderate on writing:

- DreamGF (DreamAI SRL, Bucharest) is built entirely around creating one character (appearance, personality presets, voice) and then generating images of her. Deep on the visual, menu-driven on the personality.
- Secrets AI (Secret Labs Inc.) lets you make one custom girlfriend even on the free tier (about 200 "Moments," 20 messages a day), with more behind Premium.
- EVA AI (Novi Limited) leans on a "progressive intimacy" system where "not everything opens up right away, you get closer over time," which is customization-as-mechanic rather than customization-as-authoring.
These are the sweet spot for most people: real control over the look, presets for the personality, no writing required.

Full authoring
If you want a girlfriend with a personality you wrote, you want a platform, not a builder:
- Character.AI exists precisely so people author characters; there are 18M+ user-created bots on it. You write the character's description and behavior. The tradeoff is the explicit-content filter (the community's "Bob").
- PolyBuzz (Cloud Whale, Delaware) claims over 20 million characters and full character creation.
- Perchance lets you build and save your own generator entirely free, if you are willing to learn its plugin system.
And the deepest end is not an app at all: local character cards, where you author personality, backstory, and lorebooks as portable files that no company can change or delete. That is the DIY route, and it is the only version where "your own" is literally true.

How to choose
- Care most about the look? DreamGF or Secrets AI, deep visual control.
- Care most about personality? Character.AI or PolyBuzz, real authoring, but filtered.
- Want her to be genuinely, permanently yours? Local character cards. No filter changes, no rug-pull.
One thing to keep in mind across all of them: on a hosted app, "your" custom girlfriend lives on their servers under their terms, and those terms can change, exactly what happened in the Replika saga. If you want to roll a random character rather than build one deliberately, that is the generators question instead.
